Every step taken is a step toward creating opportunities where they are needed most.
BRIAN THABANI GWALA (Action) is a renowned actor, creative, mental health advocate, and the founder of The African Walker, a purpose-driven movement dedicated to raising awareness about depression, mental health, and the transformative power of purpose.
For Action, raising awareness is only the beginning. He believes that real change happens when awareness is followed by action. That belief has led him to create meaningful opportunities for young people by establishing platforms such as The Black Beret Media Academy and The Black Beret Sports Academy, where undiscovered talent can be identified, nurtured, and developed through acting, theatre, storytelling, media, and sport.
Through every journey, every conversation, and every step, Action is committed to building a future where hope is restored, communities are empowered, and young Africans are given the opportunity to discover their potential and pursue their purpose.
Born in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and later relocating to Johannesburg to pursue a career in the performing arts, Action's journey extends far beyond the stage. Driven by a deep desire to help others overcome life's challenges, he has transformed his personal experiences into a mission of hope, resilience, and healing.
On 13 June 2023, Action embarked on his first extraordinary awareness campaign, walking from Johannesburg to Port Shepstone via Durban. With no sponsorship and limited resources, he endured unimaginable hardships—sleeping in bushes, at petrol stations, and surviving on whatever food he could find. Despite these obstacles, he completed the journey in just 13 days, proving the strength of the human spirit when fuelled by purpose.
Action firmly believes that every person battles depression differently and that there is no single "right" way to cope. His message is simple yet powerful: never stop moving forward, even when life becomes difficult.
His long-term vision is to establish a nationwide support network and host an annual Depression Awareness Summit in South Africa, bringing together individuals, communities, professionals, and stakeholders committed to supporting mental wellness and creating meaningful change.

04 — The Expedition
Walking for Africa's Future.
The Cape to Cairo Expedition is more than an endurance challenge—it is a journey of hope, purpose, and action.
The walk begins in Johannesburg on 5 September 2026, travelling to Cape Town, before continuing north from Cape Town to Cairo.
Every kilometre walked aims to spark meaningful conversations around mental health while creating lasting opportunities for young people across Africa.
The expedition is founded on one simple belief: awareness alone is not enough. Lasting change requires ACTION.
Across Africa, countless talented young people possess extraordinary gifts in the arts, sport, leadership, and creativity. Yet unemployment, poverty, and limited access to opportunity prevent many from developing their potential. This often contributes to hopelessness, substance abuse, crime, and declining mental wellbeing.
Rather than merely highlighting these challenges, this mission is focused on creating practical solutions by building safe, inspiring spaces where young people can discover their talents, develop valuable skills, build confidence, and build brighter futures.
Through The Black Beret Movement, we believe Africa's greatest resource is not what lies beneath its soil—it is the potential of its people.
Africa already possesses the creativity, resilience, intelligence, leadership, and innovation required to solve many of its challenges.
By bringing people together around a shared purpose, we can raise a new generation of dreamers, entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, storytellers, creators, and leaders who will shape Africa's future.
Our mission is not simply to inspire hope—but to build ecosystems where hope becomes opportunity.
05 — Where Support Goes
Supporting awareness campaigns, educational programmes, community conversations, theatre performances, and partnerships that encourage healing, hope, and access to mental health support.
Already supporting more than 30 young creatives, with more joining every intake, the Academy equips aspiring actors, filmmakers, presenters, dancers, storytellers, poets, and media professionals with practical skills, mentorship, and real-world opportunities.
Sport transforms lives by building discipline, leadership, confidence, teamwork, and resilience. The Academy will identify and develop young sporting talent while creating pathways for personal and professional growth.
Our vision is to establish community libraries and learning centres in underserved communities where young people can access books, digital resources, educational programmes, mentorship, practical skills, and entrepreneurship training. These centres will prepare young people for employment, lifelong learning, and leadership.
Beyond the Walk
The destination is not simply Cairo. The true destination is a generation of young Africans equipped to lead, innovate, create, and transform their communities. This expedition marks the beginning of a much larger movement—one that replaces hopelessness with opportunity, isolation with community, and untapped potential with purpose.
Every donation, every partnership, every kilometre walked, and every conversation held helps build a stronger Africa where young people are empowered not only to dream, but to become the architects of the continent's future. Awareness is only the first step. Opportunity changes lives. Every step taken today helps build the Africa we all believe is possible.
06 — Take Action
When you support this expedition, you are not simply funding a walk. You are helping create opportunities for young Africans to discover their talents, develop skills, and build brighter futures.
